Project 3

Technology with a mind of its own/ Strange Paranormal Occurrences

After a rocky start of how to best form groups in a college level classroom, my partners Jay and Kendra decided on using a GPS as our main technology that goes haywire. Our main idea was how some people need to use a GPS to get anywhere. We want to play around with the idea that a trip that could take 2 minutes could turn out much longer when using a malfunctioning GPS. More details to arrive when we have them.

Bells

Bells bells, magical bells. An idea of some of the bell shapes I am looking at for inspiration.
I am going to make, hanging bells, hand bells, bells on the wall, and one really large bell to stand out from the rest.

Some will ring with participation help, others will look like they can ring but will be unable to ring. The bells will be clay (wheel thrown and hand built) and bronze, at this point.

More ideas and sketches from sketchbook to come soon!

Project One

Part 1:

Slide 2
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer

Slide 2
  • Lozano-Hemmer placed eighteen robotic searchlights around Mexico City's Zócalo.
  • Participants used a Web-based interface to control the searchlights, choreographing patterns on the night sky and the urban landscape
  • Vectorial Elevation is primarily a celebration of the potential these technologies have to produce a new kind of participatory spectacle.
  • Technologies: 18 robotic 7kW xenon searchlights, 4 webcams, TCP/IP to DMX converter, Java 3D interface, GPS tracker, linux web and e-mail servers.
Part 2: News Article
Is a parent responsible for a child's Body size?

Part 3: Sixth Sense

'SixthSense' is a wearable gestural interface that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information.

Artist of the week: Beate Kuhn

CA. 1950 HEIGHT 17 CM / 6,7 INCH 175 Euros

Beate Kuhn is a fantastic ceramic artist who makes altered wheel thrown objects. I chose her because my fiance is currently in Germany, which is where she is from. (I asked him to bring me back something ceramic-y like a stein or something)

Okay, on to her work!
When you look up work from Kuhn, you get the same double cat image and weird egg shaped object. With a bit of time you can skim past those oddities and find some of her gems. This is an awesome vase, that I can only image how it was constructed. I assume she starts by throwing a large vase then rips out the center to make it the way we see it today.

I might just need to hop on the wheel myself and try to construct one of these myself. Except I think I would add another hole on the other side. I want to make a vase/ cup for my wedding that has that whole unity thingy attached to it.

Here is some more of her fabulous works:

Sorry, there is no names or dates, these were taken mostly from German websites.
